SUMMARY:Glaciers Tell the Truth with Dr. Lonnie Thompson
DESCRIPTION:Somewhere on a mountain in Peru\, there’s a chunk of ice that’s been sitting there for over 1\,800 years. Locked inside it is a record of every drought\, every eruption\, every shift in the atmosphere. A frozen archive of Earth’s climate history that no one can argue with. \nLonnie G. Thompson is one of the world’s foremost authorities on paleoclimatology and glaciology. He has led 68 expeditions during the last 50 years\, conducting ice-core drilling programs in the Polar Regions as well as on the high mountain glaciers in 16 countries including China\, Peru\, Russia\, Tanzania and Papua\, Indonesia. Among many awards he has received he holds the U.S. National Medal of Science\, the highest honor the U.S. awards to American scientists. \nFood and drink will be available from the kitchen at Shadowbox Live! Use the code “getnerdy” to lower the $8 suggested donation to $4.

SUMMARY:Columbus Science Pub Presents: Green infrastructure for stormwater management in Ohio
DESCRIPTION:As spring rains arrive\, much of the runoff in cities cannot soak into the ground because roofs\, roads\, sidewalks\, and other hard surfaces cover the soil. This talk explores how green infrastructure projects – such as rain gardens\, permeable pavement\, and constructed wetlands – are being used across Ohio to reintroduce soil into cities and manage stormwater more naturally. Drawing on real monitoring data\, it highlights what works\, what doesn’t\, and what these projects mean for neighborhoods and waterways. \nJoey Smith is a water resources engineer and researcher in the stormwater management program at Ohio State University. His current research focuses on monitoring the hydrologic performance and water quality benefits of large-scale green infrastructure and wetland projects across Ohio. \n

SUMMARY:Columbus Science Pub Presents: Architecture Beyond Earth: Reimagining Human Habitation in Low Earth Orbit
DESCRIPTION:“The International Space Station\, after more than 25 years in orbit\, has proven humans can survive in space\, but thriving remains elusive” says Marta Nowak\, a registered architect\, designer and educator. \nNowak\, February’s speaker\, is the Christos Yessios Digital Fabrication Assistant Professor at the Knowlton School and co-founder of AN-ONYMOUS\, an award-winning design office that focuses on experimental approaches toward architecture and technology. Their works has been widely published and exhibited at international venues such as Hammer Museum\, the A+D Museum\, and MoMA PS1. Their firm has been a consultant to Google\, Hyperloop Transportation Technology and NASA JPL. \nJoin Columbus Science Pub to hear all about the challenges and early research on long-term habitation in space. And who knows\, maybe we’ll even discuss a challenge or two related to co-habitating on orbit. \nFood and drink will be available from the kitchen at Shadowbox Live! Use the code “getnerdy” to lower the $8 suggested donation to $4. \nGet tickets here.

SUMMARY:The Science of Sesame Street: What Kids Learn\, and What They Don’t
DESCRIPTION:Children’s educational TV is full of catchy songs\, colorful characters\, and big ideas—but sometimes the way lessons are represented can confuse more than clarify. In this talk\, Dr. James Alexander Bonus explores how kids interpret science lessons on TV\, why parents sometimes learn more than their children\, and how co-viewing can turn screen time into a powerful learning opportunity.\nDr. Bonus is an Associate Professor in the School of Communication at The Ohio State University. His research explores how screen media—especially educational television—shapes children’s understanding of science and the world around them. \nFood and drink will be available from the kitchen at Shadowbox Live! Use the code “getnerdy” to skip the $5 suggested donation. \nTickets: https://boxoffice.upfrontps.org/event/the-science-of-sesame-street-what-kids-learn-and-what-they-dont/

SUMMARY:Weird Science with Dr. Rob Pyatt
DESCRIPTION:Weird Science is back at the Columbus Science Pub! Join Dr. Rob Pyatt as he leads the pub through some of the strangest science studies ever conducted like “Estimation of the Total Saliva Volume Produced Per Day by Five-Year-Old Children”. \nYou can also participate in the current Weird Science study “Identification of Icons on Bathroom Fixtures “and we’ll be reviewing the results at the Pub to see if our results replicate the original study. \nOver the 20+ years of Weird Science\, some of the favorite studies we have conducted have involved the bathroom. So for 2025\, we’re heading back there! \nBelow is a link to a survey called “Identification of Icons on Bathroom Fixtures”. It’s open to anyone 18 years of age or older as the survey is about things that go on in the bathroom. \nAs part of the survey\, you will be shown some icons or images that are meant to represent things associated with bathroom fixtures and their functions. If viewing such images isn’t something that sounds interesting to you\, please skip this survey. This is strictly fun science and there will always be another Weird Science study that you can contribute to later. \nWith Weird Science\, you’re guaranteed to laugh and learn something. \nComplete the survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LQKC6LY \nFood and drink will be available from the kitchen at Shadowbox Live! Use the code “getnerdy” to skip the $5 suggested donation. \nGet your tickets here: https://boxoffice.upfrontps.org/event/weird-science-with-dr-rob-pyatt/
